Do we ever grow out of making snuggly, hidey-holes? This week, our baby room staff have brought our weaving tunnels indoors and found a whole new purpose for them. The little ones have loved turning them into dens, with fabric and ribbons and making them their own.
The Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum tells us that:
‘A rich and varied environment supports children’s learning and development. It gives them the confidence to explore and learn in secure and safe, yet challenging, indoor and outdoor spaces’
Small spaces are important to young children, particularly those who are quieter in nature. An enclosed area can provide emotional security and a feeling of comfort. We also notice that children often demonstrate different ways of playing when their environment is snug; these are their spaces, not for sharing with grown-ups!
